5 reasons why strength training can improve joint pain
Did you know that most of our gym members are between the ages of 40-55, with some even in their 70s? These members are seeing amazing results, reporting they feel younger and experience less joint pain than friends their age who don’t strength train.
If you’re starting to feel older than you’d like, or if joint discomfort is holding you back, let’s talk about how strength training can help. Here are five ways it can make a big difference for your joints:
1. Strengthens Surrounding Muscles
Building up the muscles around your joints provides greater stability and support. When these muscles are stronger, they take on more of the workload, easing the pressure on your joints. This often leads to reduced pain and improved joint function.
2. Improves Joint Mobility and Flexibility
Strength training involves controlled movements that guide your joints through their full range of motion. This practice not only strengthens but also maintains joint flexibility and mobility, which can prevent stiffness and help you move more comfortably.
3. Reduces Inflammation
Regular strength training helps lower inflammation in the body. By encouraging the release of anti-inflammatory proteins, exercise can help regulate your body’s inflammatory responses. Lower inflammation often means less joint discomfort and better overall joint health.
4. Supports Healthy Weight Management
Strength training is a powerful tool for building muscle, which boosts metabolism and aids in weight management. Keeping a healthy weight lessens the load on your joints, reducing wear and tear and relieving some of the discomfort associated with joint strain.
5. Enhances Bone Density
Building bone density is especially important as we age. Strength training improves bone density, giving joints a solid foundation and lowering the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Stronger bones also mean more joint stability and less pain over time.
The biggest barrier to starting strength training for many people is fear—fear of injury, of not knowing where to start, or simply feeling out of place. But trust me, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose (except joint pain!).
