How to enjoy the holidays without taking a vacation from your fitness goals
at the start of each new year, it’s common to hear about how holiday festivities took a toll on fitness routines and goals. But what if, instead of waiting until January, you kept up with your current schedule—or even started a new one? That’s two extra months to build momentum and get a jumpstart on your 2025 goals!
I know how easy it is to let go during the holidays, especially with three kids in the house. Between family gatherings, school events, and endless holiday treats, it sometimes feels like everything pulls you away from your routine. But I’ve found that sticking with a few key habits—even just 15-20 minutes a day—helps me keep some balance without feeling guilty about indulging in the festivities. Here’s how you can do the same!
Build Habits That Stick
If you can keep a few good habits going through the busiest, most tempting time of year, you’ll be well-prepared to carry them into the new year. The holidays are all about joy and celebration, and yes, that includes indulging a bit! But here are some straightforward strategies to help you stay fit and enjoy the season:
- Plan Your Meals Headed to a holiday party? Try having a quick protein shake or a handful of nuts beforehand. Prioritizing protein helps you feel fuller and more satisfied, making it easier to enjoy treats without overdoing it. As a parent, I like this approach because it’s easy and keeps my energy up when I’m on the go, whether I’m shuttling the kids to their activities or preparing for holiday gatherings.
- Stay Active in Small Ways The holidays might throw your routine for a loop, but there are always ways to fit in some movement. If you’re a member at One Life, check out our semi-private sessions, group classes, private training, or even travel workouts if you’re hitting the road. Even at home, consider family walks, setting a timer for quick bodyweight exercises, or even a game of tag with the kids!
- Portion Control Without Deprivation At holiday dinners, using a smaller plate or glass helps you control portions naturally. Pair each meal with water or tea to stay hydrated and keep things balanced. As someone with a busy schedule, I’ve noticed that just a bit of mindfulness can make a big difference, and it’s a practice I try to share with my family too. We still enjoy all the holiday favorites—just in a way that doesn’t leave us feeling overly stuffed.
- Mindful Alcohol Consumption: The 2/3 Rule If alcohol is part of your holiday plans, consider following the 2/3 guideline:
- Limit to 2 drinks in one evening
- No more than 7 drinks total per week
- Try to avoid more than 2 consecutive nights with drinks
Stay on Track and Build Confidence
We still have two months left in 2024—that’s plenty of time to solidify the progress you’ve made and enjoy the season while building habits you can carry into the new year. Commit to a few of these strategies, and you’ll be racing into 2025 feeling your best.
