The Pullup: A Beginner’s Guide to Building Upper Body Pulling Strength

The pullup is a fantastic bodyweight exercise (and can be performed with weight for added strength) that targets your back, shoulders, and biceps. It involves hanging from a bar and pulling your body up until your chin is above the bar. By engaging your core, you can maintain proper form and maximize the benefits.

Here’s how to perform a pullup:

1. Grab the bar with your palms facing away from you, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.

2. Hang from the bar with your arms fully extended. This is your starting position.

3. Engage your core muscles and pull your body up by bending your elbows. Focus on bringing your chin above the bar.

4. Pause for a moment at the top of the movement, then lower your body back down to the starting position with controlled movement.

The pullup offers several advantages in addition to building upper body strength and power. It can improve your grip strength and help enhance your posture. Moreover, it can assist you in functional movements like climbing or carrying heavy objects.
